Filing an application for an European patent

Description of service

If a citizen or entrepreneur decides to obtain patent protection in two or more countries that are members of the European Patent Organisation, he or she can file a European patent application. A European patent application can be filed at the Industrial Property Office of the Slovak Republic (hereinafter "the Office") or directly at the European Patent Office (hereinafter "the EPO"). In the case of filing through the Central Portal of Public Administration, the filing shall not be subject to the reductions for electronic filing provided for in the EPO Fee Regulations.
The service allows a citizen or an entrepreneur to file a European patent application by means of an electronic form. Once the European patent application has been filed, the citizen or entrepreneur shall only communicate directly with the EPO during the prosecution of the application.

The service is intended for a citizen or an entrepreneur who is interested in patent protection in two or more countries which are members of the European Patent Organisation.

What is the purpose of the service
The service is used to file a European patent application.

Method of use of the service
The service shall make an electronic form available to the citizen or entrepreneur in the electronic forms module operated by the Office. After filling in the electronic form, the citizen or entrepreneur sends it to his electronic mailbox on the Central Portal of Public Administration, from where he then makes the actual filing with the Office.

No, not required.

Charging for the service
The service is chargeable. The fees for filing a European patent application are set out in the EPO Fee Regulations and are payable to the EPO.
