Journal's Statute
Introductory Provision
Intellectual Property is a professional journal focused on theory and practice in the field of intellectual property, intended for both professional and general audiences. The Statute governs the activities of the editorial board and the principles of publishing the journal. This governing act is binding for all employees of the office, members of the editorial board, and authors of articles.
Normative Part
Article 1
Editorial Board
- The members of the editorial board are appointed and dismissed by the Chairperson of the Office based on the proposal of the executive editor. The number of editorial board members is not fixed.
- The members of the editorial board perform their duties without entitlement to remuneration.
- The editorial board consists of external experts in the field of intellectual property.
- The editorial board decides on the publication of individual key authorial works.
- Duties of the members of the editorial board:
- Attend meetings of the editorial board,
- Decide on the publication of key authorial works,
- Prepare at least two key authorial works for the journal annually (either their own contributions or those from other authors within their professional sphere),
- Expand the authorial network,
- Review expert contributions (prepare a review report),
- Systematically work on improving the quality of the journal (especially in terms of content),
- Submit suggestions and insights that deserve attention from the perspective of the journal’s content focus.
- The editorial board is chaired by its president, who is elected by the members of the board by a majority vote of the present members.
- The editorial board meets typically four times a year, and minutes are taken during the meetings.
Article 2
Editorial Team
- The editorial team consists of directors of the specialized departments of the Industrial Property Office of the Slovak Republic, representing the following departments: the Legislative and Legal Department, the Appeals Department, the Dispute Resolution Department, the Trademarks and Designs Department, and the Patent Department.
- The editorial team is led by the president of the editorial board.
- The editorial team meets typically four times a year.
- The editorial team does not have decision-making authority but serves as an advisory body in terms of the journal’s content.
Article 3
Executive Editor
- The executive editor is responsible for managing tasks related to the creation of the journal, editing contributions, and working with the editorial board to expand the pool of contributors to the journal.
- Duties of the executive editor:
- Collect contributions for the journal,
- Assign reviewers for key contributions based on the recommendations of the editorial board members,
- Send key contributions to reviewers and forward the reviewed works along with the review reports to the authors for revisions,
- Submit the final versions of contributions for language proofreading,
- Organize meetings of the editorial board and prepare minutes of those meetings.
Article 4
Deadline for Submission of Key Authorial Works, Editing, Expanding the Contributor Pool, Distribution, and Pricing of the Journal
- The deadline for submitting key authorial works, including the review report, is seven days before the editorial board meeting. The recommended length for a key authorial work in the journal is 10 to 30 normalized pages. For longer works, the editorial board, with the author’s consent, may publish the article in installments.
- Members of the editorial board, authors of key contributions, and partners of the office receive one copy of the journal free of charge.
- The Industrial Property Office of the Slovak Republic publishes the journal typically four times a year in both printed and electronic formats.
- Distribution of the journal is managed by authorized employees of the office.
- The price of the journal, as well as subscription fees for both printed and electronic versions, is determined by the Chairperson of the Office based on the proposal of the executive editor. The price of the journal includes postage according to the Slovak Postal Service tariff.
Article 5
Language Editing of Journal Texts
Language proofreading in Slovak is ensured by the executive editor through an internal language proofreader.
Article 6
Author Compensation for Works Published in the Journal
Compensation for authors is governed by the directive "Compensation for Authors of Works Published in the Intellectual Property Journal."
Transitional and Final Provisions

This statute was approved by the Chairperson of the Industrial Property Office of the Slovak Republic.

Upon the effectiveness of this statute, the statute No. Št/4/2017 V3 – Statute of the Intellectual Property Journal is repealed.

This statute enters into force on the date of approval.
